Category:

Selecting a Category other than All will limit the results to the Category selected.

You may select multiple categories within a list box by holding down the ‘Ctrl’ key or the Apple Command key while clicking on the options.

While most of the categories listed are self-explanatory, a few merit additional explanation.

The General Category includes search engines that are not limited to a specific area or subject.

The Metasearch Category includes search engines or front-ends with multiple inputs to other search engines.

The Directories Category includes e-mail directories, white and yellow page directories. Use this Category to find search engines that find people or businesses.

The News Category includes search engines for online news sources as well as newspapers.

The Publications Category includes search engines for books and magazines.

The Adult Category includes search engines for sites with adult content and are not suitable for children. Adult search engines will not be returned unless the Adult category is selected and the browsers content filter is disabled.

Country

Selecting a Country other than All will limit the results to search engines in or about the selected Country.

You may select multiple countries within a list box by holding down the ‘Ctrl’ key or the Apple Command key while clicking on the options.

Keywords

Keywords may be separated with a space or a comma.

Leaving the Keyword field blank will result in returning all search engines in the selected Category and Country.

Keywords entered in the Keyword field are case insensitive. They may be either upper or lower case.

If more than one keyword is entered the results will match all keywords. This is similar to the AND function used in some search engines. If it is desired for the results to match any of the keywords (OR function), multiple searches may be made, one for each keyword.

If the name of the search engine desired is known you may enter the name (or any word in the name) in the Keywords field.

Since many countries have few search engines, it is advisable to leave the Keyword field blank and the Category set to All when selecting a Country other than All or USA.

Entering TOP 7 in the Keywords field will return what are sometimes considered the top 7 search engines.

To restrict the results to a specific country with Country set to All, you may enter the country name in the Keywords field along with any other keywords. This is an option to selecting a country from the Country list.

If you are seeking a search engine for a specific purpose or subject you may have better results entering one or two keywords, leaving the Category set to All and the Country set to All.
For example: To find search engines in or about Arizona, enter Arizona as the Keyword.
To find newspapers with search engines, enter Newspapers as the Keyword.
To find newspapers in Arizona with search engines, enter Arizona Newspapers as the Keywords.

If you want to browse the search engine database it is generally best to leave the Keyword field blank while selecting a Category other than All or a Country other than All or USA.
